A friend of mine recently announced that he was going to learn to play axe. He wanted to be able to learn axe solo performances that would rock people’s socks off (his phrase, not mine) and that he would soon be snapped up by an up and coming band (his view, not mine). Unfortunately far from being able to learn axe solo riffs and tunes to knock certain items of footwear from neighbouring feet, he found it difficult to scratch out a single chord to begin with.

He confidently picked up the axe, strummed it a bit, and then got to work looking at the book of tabs which came with it. I agreed with him that it all looked quite simple and straightforward. There were the strings, there on the page were the strings, there were the frets, and there on the page were the frets. All that was necessary was to place fingers in the places where the dots were drawn, and then you’d be enjoying listening to the sounds of some of the most popularly used chords in axe music.

Except that it took him a full five minutes to contort his fingers into position to play the first chord. When he did, he managed one strum before having to let go and rest his hand. I explained to him that I had read somewhere that anyone looking to learn axe will have to accept that the first few tries will need to be brief, as the hand will need to use muscles in ways never done before, as well as toughening up the fingertips. The best axeists have incredibly callused fingertips, whereas my friend’s were about as callused as a baby’s freshly talcummed bottom.

After a few more agonising screeches and twangs which sounded a little as though a cat and a mouse were having a fight in a rubber band factory, except slightly less tuneful, he decided that instead of trying to learn axe solo performances, he’d just mime instead. After all, that’s what most of the bands do these days, so he claimed.

Fortunately before he could admit complete defeat we switched on the computer and had a look online for help. After all, he wasn’t the first person in the world to try to learn axe, and there were almost certainly plenty of people able to offer some help and advice. My friend wasn’t completely convinced that paying large sums of money to a music teacher every week was a good idea, preferring instead to be self taught. The beauty of the internet is of course that you can be almost completely self taught, whilst also being taught by some of the best music teachers in the world.

For anyone looking to learn to play axe, video tutorials online offer a real advantage, allowing you to see exactly how people achieve what sometimes seems to be the impossible when relying solely on printed tablature books and diagrams. Watching how someone else does it makes a huge difference, and after watching just one ‘learn to play axe video’ my friend was able to play the first chord which ease.

Once he saw someone else play it. It made a good deal more sense. Because tab diagrams only show where your finger tips go, yet playing axe uses your whole hand, arm and most of your body. The video included a number of other tips, including different ways in which the same chord could be played, and different ways of holding the axe. Although my friend is not yet playing solo at Wembley, he is now able to learn axe solo performances which sound less like a cat being strangled. Which is something his neighbours are very pleased about.

One of the huge advantages today for anyone looking to learn to play axe is the many thousands of axe video tutorials available online. Beginning to learn to play axe is an eye opening experience, because when you see axeists playing and performing you tend to assume it’s relatively easy. After all, most professional axeists and performers seem fairly relaxed, and their hold on the axe and positioning of their hands seems relaxed and natural.

It’s only when you first hold a axe and try to contort your fingers into position you realise just how difficult it is. First of all you have to work out how the tab diagrams correspond to the strings, frets and fingers, and once you’ve achieved this you then have to work out how to get your fingers into those positions. You’ll usually find your wrist straining for some time, and you may even wonder whether you were born with extra short fingers, but had never previously noticed.

Although this period of time doesn’t last for long if you practise regularly, it is an inevitable part of the learning process, and a stage that sees many people being put off. But it’s in these early days of learning to play axe that it is very easy to start to develop bad habits. If you adapt your own tab positions and hand positions because of comfort and convenience then you may find that not only is the quality of the sound less than ideal, but moving from one tab or chord position to another is not as smooth and doesn’t provide the same level of performance as you hear from other people playing.

This is why it is now such a good idea to take advantage of some of the really good axe video tutorials online. There really is no better way to learn axe tabs than seeing someone else do it, with a axe, and going step by step through the process, demonstrating how to hold the axe, and how to move from one tab to the next. This makes a good deal more sense than trying to work it out by looking at diagrams, and it also gives you a better understanding of how professional and experienced axeists overcome the problems you’ll inevitably be experiencing whilst starting to learn axe.

But in fact the axe video tutorials available go far beyond simply helping to teach the basics to those starting out with the first few tabs. If you can already play axe then you may find that there are some chords or chord changes which have you stumped. You may find a particular combination is a little tricky, resulting in a reduced level of sound quality, or a clumsy or uncomfortable change from one tab to another. In this way it is possible to find online axe video tutorials which have been recorded by some professional axeists, including many of those who play in well known bands and groups, demonstrating exactly how to accomplish what seems to be almost the impossible.
